Cubs Name Team Captains

The Greater Sudbury Cubs are pleased to announce the team’s leadership group for the 2021-22 season.

The new team captain is Owen Perala, 19, who hails from Nipigon, Ontario. The big 6’4”, 200 lb forward was acquired from the Cochrane Crunch last season. Perala scored 21 goals and recorded 49 points in 55 games with the Crunch as a 17-year-old. Last season, Perala recorded 7 goals and 11 points in 10 games during a Covid-shortened NOJHL season in Rayside.

Perala recently attended the OHL Sudbury Wolves Training camp and has a goal and an assist in his first two games to start the season with the Cubs.

Recently acquired veteran forward Cameron Walker will serve as an Alternate Captain this season. Walker, 18, is a resident of Sudbury and played two seasons for the Espanola Express. In 71 NOJHL games, Cameron has recorded 18 goals, 23 assists for 41 points. Walker is a 9th round selection of the OHL Kingston Frontenacs. Walker notched his first point in his first league game as a member of the Cubs.

Also serving as an Alternate Captain is Carter Geoffroy. Geoffroy, is a 19-year-old right- shot defenceman and will be counted on as a leader on the blueline for the Cubs this season. Geoffroy was acquired last season from the St. Catharines Falcons of the GOJHL. Geoffroy recorded 4 assists in 9 games played with the Canadians last season. Geoffroy recently attended the OHL Niagara Ice Dogs camp as a free agent.

Closing-out the Cubs’ captaincy group is newly-acquired veteran forward Kyler Campbell. Campbell, 20, is a skilled forward that was acquired in August from the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners of the NOJHL. The 6’, 200 lb forward recorded 15 goals, 13 assists for 28 points in 58 games with the Gold Miners. The Huntsville, Ontario native has scored 2 goals in his first two games with the Cubs this season.

“We are very fortunate to have a leadership group of this calibre” notes Cubs Head Coach Vagelli Sakellaris. “Owen Perala is an outstanding leader and all four of our captains are very passionate about our team and their teammates.”

Cubs Captain Owen Perala and his teammates will host the Blind River Beavers tomorrow night (Thursday) at 7:30 at the Gerry McCrory Countryside Arena. A limited number of admission tickets are available for sale at the door or emailing britt@ntaaa.ca in advance. Proof of full-vaccination is now required to enter the arena and facemasks and social distancing are required.
