The Greater Sudbury Cubs will look to make it two-in-a-row over Kirkland Lake Gold Miners this Thursday night at 7:30 at the Countryside Arena. The Cubs earned a hard-fought 5-4 victory on Saturday night in Kirkland Lake on the strength of a last-second goal by Cameron Shanks. Carter Geoffroy made the play of
the night passing the puck from a sharp angle in the dieing seconds to set-up Shanks for the game winner.
The Cubs will be looking for a win on home ice on Thursday night as the Cubs are looking to rebound from two overtime losses on home ice last week at the hands of the Powassan Voodoos and Hearst Lumberjacks. Both games against the Eastern Conference leaders ended in 2-1 scores. Jaxon Bedard scored the lone goal on the power play against Powassan while Josh Boucher notched the only Cubs goal against Hearst. Admission to Thursday’s game remains restricted to those that show proof of vaccination and a QR code either printed or on their phone. Facemasks and social distancing will also be required. A maximum of 400 fans can attend the venue. Admission is only $10 for adults and $5 for juniors (18 and under) and seniors (65 and over). Youngsters 12 years of age and under are admitted free when accompanied by an Adult.
The Cubs will hit the road for the Family Holiday Weekend with stops in Cochrane, Hearst and Timmins on Saturday, Sunday and Monday respectively. On Saturday night, the Cubs jumped-out to a quick 2-0 lead on goals by Cameron Walker (6th) and Jaxon Bedard (11th) before Kirkland Lake scored on the power play. Pierson Sobush scored his first of two goals on the night in the dieing minute of the period. For Sobush, it was his 9th goal of the season and the Sudbury native wasn’t finished there. The Gold Miners tied the score 3-3 in the middle frame before Sobush scored his second of the night and his 10th goal of the season and gave the Cubs a 4-3 lead heading into the final frame.
The Gold Miners scored with the extra attacker on the ice in the final minute of the game. It appeared that the contest was heading to overtime. Cue the heroics as Josh Boucher fired a point shot that Carter Geoffroy gathered off the end-boards and fired a perfect pass onto the stick of Cameron Shanks who made no mistake tipping-in the game winner with no time left on the clock. The exciting win was back-stopped by Jake Marois who faced 33 shots. The Cubs fired 40 shots at the Kirkland Lake net. Sobush was named 1st star of the game!
To summarize, it will be a hectic week for the Sudbury Cubs beginning Thursday night at the Countryside Arena at 7:30 against Kirkland Lake followed by a 3-game road trip with games in Cochrane, Hearst and
Timmins.
