IROQUOIS FALLS, Ont. – Blasting open a one-goal game with five unanswered third period tallies, the Greater Sudbury Cubs went on to dump the Iroquois Falls Storm 7-1 in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League encounter Saturday at Jus Jordan Arena.
The efforts of Storm starter Nathan Boudreau kept the league-leading Cubs off the scoreboard in the opening 20 minutes, while Matthew Vahramian was also unbeatable for the visitors.
In the second period, Iroquois Falls cracked the goose egg at 7:20 when Alexandre St. Pierre finished off a two-man break off a pass from Mathieu Ouellette.
Greater Sudbury got that back three minutes later thanks to Lucas Antonioni, who neatly steered in a Caden Dubreuil chance from up high with one hand on his stick.
Collecting the second assist was Alex Valade, who has now picked up at least one point in each of his past 13 contests played, while Dubreuil is presently on an eight-game heater.
The Cubs then took the lead while up a skater as Owen King took a cross-ice back pass from Nolan Newton and snapped it past Boudreau.
With the helper, Newton extended a point streak to 18 in succession.
Heading to the final stanza, the visitors blew it open by striking five times in an 11-and-a-half-minute span to win going away.
Dubreuil began the outburst by pressuring a turnover and racing in alone on a shorthanded breakaway where he made a nice move to his right and lifted in a backhand on Boudreau.
After Eidan Macartney added another a couple of shifts later, by chopping in a Nate Lazarus point shot, King collected his second of the night and 38th overall by converting on a man advantage at 10:28 after whipping one in while driving down the slot.
Greater Sudbury then finished it off with Dubreuil capping off a big night offensively with another goal and Macartney slamming his second of the stanza to wrap it up.
With the victory, the front-running Cubs move to 37-6-2-2 overall and in defeat, the Storm sink to 14-29-2-3.
