FRENCH RIVER – The Greater Sudbury Cubs got a goal in each period to help them edge the French River Rapids 3-1 Sunday in a tightly-contested Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League match-up at Noelville Arena.
The lone tally of the opening 20 minutes came off the stick of Greater Sudbury’s Ben Lacroix as he came down the left wing and fired a shot that clipped off a French River defender and sailed high past netminder Elijah Grant.
Adding another 4:46 into the second stanza, the Cubs’ Mason Chitaroni weaved his way up ice into the Rapids zone and snapped a shot from inside the blueline that eluded Grant off a partial screen.
French River got one back, early in the third, during a lengthy man advantage that saw Nolan Masson send Abram Snider in on Greater Sudbury goalie Noah Beaulne and lift in a back hand at 1:40.
The Cubs answered that with an insurance effort deep into regulation as Oliver Smith worked a give-and-go with Hudson Chitaroni and made a nice low deflection to help secure the road win.
With the outcome, Greater Sudbury improves to 30-7-1-1 on the season and with the narrow loss, French River falls to 8-30-1-0.
