Kirkland Lake, Ont. – Breaking open a low-scoring affair with four unanswered second-period goals, the Greater Sudbury Cubs went on to dump the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners 9-1 in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play Friday at Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.
The NOJHL-leading Cubs took an early lead, via the power play, that saw Cameron Shanks connect 2:09 into the contest as he took a cross-ice pass from Samuel Assinewai and whipped it by Gold Miners’ starter Caleb Shuker from the top of the right circle.
With the assist, Assinewai now has points in 12 straight outings.
Greater Sudbury then made it 2-0 midway through the opening frame when Jacob Lamoureux slammed in a shot from a sharp angle off a chance created by Daks Klinkhammer.
In picking up a helper, Klinkhammer extended a consecutive game point streak to nine.
Heading to the middle session, the Cubs broke it open with their multi-marker outburst in the back half of the period.
Lucas Signoretti notched his league-best 26th tally at 13:35 off a wrap-around.
After Klinkhammer clicked a couple of shifts later by squeaking one through Shuker, the guests banged in two more in the final minute to go ahead by six.
Ben Harris chipped one in from a sharp angle before Lamoureux lifted in a backhand from close range.
In the third, Signoretti supplied his 27th, during a power play, by pumping in a Noah Kohan pass from in deep.
Kirkland Lake eventually solved Greater Sudbury goalkeeper Noah Beaulne at 7:09 thanks to Simon McCandless scoring for a second-straight outing as he slid in a close-range backhand.
Wrapping things offensively for the Cubs were Ryan Rubic, who banked one in from along the goal line, and Lucas Antonioni, with a nice shot from the right circle.
Now winners of 10 games in succession, Greater Sudbury improves to 24-2-1-1 over in the NOJHL standings and in defeat, the Gold Miners fall to 2-22-0-2.
