SUDBURY, ON – Oliver Smith, Ethan Larmand and Nolan Newton all had two goals as the Greater Sudbury Cubs dumped the Soo Eagles 7-1 on the big ice at Countryside Arena Thursday night.
The Cubs also made the Eagles pay on special teams as Greater Sudbury scored three times on the power play in the contest.
The Cubs opened the scoring just over five minutes in as Nolan Newton cashed in on a 2 on 1 opportunity for his 21st of the campaign which made in 1-0 for the home squad as that one slipped past Eagles starter Anthony Zolezzi.
Cubs forward Marshall McCharles, who returned to the lineup for the first time in 2024 since sustaining a lower-body injury in November, was credited with an assist on the Newton goal.
The Cubs increased their lead again on another odd man rush just seconds into the middle frame as Ethan Larmand ripped a one-timer off a feed from Oliver Smith.
The Eagles got one back as Darby McCarthy’s stretch pass found Cooper Fredericks and he beat Cubs netminder Noah Beaulne to make it 2-1.
However, moments after the goal, the Cubs restored the two-goal lead as Brock Houser’s long shot eluded Zolezzi which made it 3-1 Cubs at 7:50.
The Cubs increased the lead on the power play as Oliver Smith beat Zolezzi from the left circle for his 31st at 9:43.
Then, in the dying seconds Oliver Smith was sent in all alone by Newton on Zolezzi and he made no mistake which made it 5-1 after 40 minutes.
Larmand made it 6-1 early into the third period as he tapped home his second of the game on a backdoor feed from Smith.
Nolan Newton added the Cubs third power play marker of the game in the final minutes to complete the scoring.
With the victory the Cubs improve to 32-8-1-1.
With the loss, the Eagles three-game winning streak was broken and they fall to 23-16-1-1.
