SUDBURY, Ont. – Pierson Sobush tallied twice as part of a 4-2 win over the Hearst Lumberjacks Tuesday at the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League Showcase at Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex.
The Cubs had a great chance to strike first on a two-man shorthanded breakaway, but one extra pass proved to be too much as the opportunity went awry.
They did get the icebreaker though late in the opening frame as Sobush had a couple of whacks at it before chipping one over a sprawled Matteo Gennaro in the Hearst net at 18:33.
Moving to the second stanza, it was more from Sobush deep into the session as he roofed one from between the hash marks to give Greater Sudbury a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes.
In the third, special teams saw the Cubs tack on a man advantage effort from Cameron Walker, as he converted by banging in the rebound of an Oliver Smith shot from the right point.
The Lumberjacks did eventually solve Greater Sudbury goalkeeper Nathaniel Boyes with 11:34 to go thanks to Mason Svarich as he buried a nice cross-ice feed from Riley Klugerman moments after a power play they were on had just expired.
Getting that back, the Cubs’ Billy Biedermann lifted in a Cameron Shanks backhand at the top of the crease.
A late man advantage helped Hearst add one more in the final minute when Mathieu Roy notched his first as a member of the Lumberjacks by knocking in a chance off an Adam Shillinglaw blast from just inside the blueline to wrap things up.
