POWASSAN, Ont. – The Greater Sudbury Cubs got two goals apiece from Hudson Chitaroni and Samuel Assinewai to help them rally past the Powassan Voodoos 7-5 Saturday in a high-scoring match-up on the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League slate at the Powassan Sportsplex.
The Voodoos opened the scoring 65 seconds into the game as Chase Thompson went to the net off a draw in the Cubs’ zone and stuffed it under Greater Sudbury starter Noah Metivier.
With the tally, Thompson now has points in 14 consecutive match-ups.
Powassan came right back and went up by a pair moments later when Reyth Smith moved into the left circle and snapped a shot through a crowd that found its way in to join Thompson with 16 goals apiece on the campaign.
On the power play to commence the second stanza, the Cubs capitalized quickly with Chitaroni finishing off a crisp give-and-go with Assinewai.
The visitors clicked again moments later with Chitaroni connecting once more as he ripped a shot high over the blocker of Voodoos’ netminder Daniel Dirracolo.
Cameron Walker then gave the guests the lead at 3:34 as he buried one from the left circle.
Building on that, Assinewai made it 4-2 a few shifts later as he fooled Dirracolo through a screen.
That resulted in Powassan making a goaltending change as Miles Gordon came in for the hosts.
Building on the move, Ryan Patrick scored 70 seconds after that to make it a 4-3 game as he took his time while skating his way into the Greater Sudbury end, then sent a sizzler past the blocker of Metivier.
The Voodoos then drew level after Cameron Lemcke cruised behind the net and put a feed in front that was promptly roofed by Rhys Smetham at 13:19.
Back and forth they went, with the Cubs retaking the lead after Brock Houser put an attempt towards the target from the top of the left circle that clipped off a Powassan defender and got by Gordon.
In the third, a sixth Sudbury marker was provided a couple minutes in when Ben Harris deftly redirected in a Chris Innes right point blast.
After Dylan McElhinny brought to Voodoos back to within one at 9:23 off another sharp Lemcke pass, Greater Sudbury came right back when Assinewai snapped in his second on the night, with help from Oliver Smith and Chitaroni, to round out the scoring.
With the road result, the Cubs move 28-7-1-1 this season and sees Powassan slip to 20-13-0-2.
