SUDBURY, Ont. – A Ryan Glazer goal, 67 seconds into overtime, was the difference as the Hearst Lumberjacks pulled out a narrow 2-1 triumph over the Greater Sudbury Cubs Friday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at the Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex.

A scoreless opening 20 minutes saw the efforts of the night’s two goalkeepers, Liam Oxner of Hearst and Greater Sudbury’s Joel Rainville, keep the clubs still in search of an ice-breaker.

In the second stanza, the Lumberjacks cracked the goose-egg at 7:22 when Cody Walker neatly redirected a shot from the right point by Alex Hunt that changed direction just enough to trickle past Rainville.

The tight-checking affair stayed 1-0 for the visitors into the intermission.

Third period play saw the Cubs handle an early man-down situation then proceed to tie it as Josh Boucher snapped a shot on net from the top of the left circle that managed to get through Oxner and slowly trickle across the goal-line for his seventh of the season.

Heading to extra time, it was Hearst that prevailed as Glazer chipped the puck free along the side boards in the neutral zone, which allowed him to drive to the net untouched where he took it wide and calmly tucked in the game-winner past the outstretched pad of Rainville to end it.

The win helped Hearst join the Powassan Voodoos with 25 wins on the season as they moved to 25-7-2-0 on the campaign.

As for Greater Sudbury, they suffered an OT setback for a second straight night and fell to 14-11-4-0 overall.
