SUDBURY, Ont. – Moving to 13-0-0-2 in their past 15 games, the surging Greater Sudbury Cubs got a hat trick from Nolan Newton and rode the shutout goaltending of Iain Wintle to humble the French River Rapids 11-0 Thursday in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League contest at Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex.
Scoring on their initial push into the French River zone, Greater Sudbury’s Caden Dubreuil darted down the right side and fired a shot that was stopped by netminder Ethan Madden, but the rebound bounced out and hit the skate of Mason Walker then slid in, just over a minute into the match-up.
That saw Walker extend a point streak to seven straight outings while Dubreuil is now on a six-game heater.
The Cubs then went by a pair at 2:55 when Owen King connected for the 10th time in his past four outings with a sharp wrist shot after darting out through the slot from the side boards.
Adding another later in the session, Alex Valade put a play to the target from the point through traffic that clipped off Newton and went into the net.
Extending their cushion in the second stanza, Daks Klinkhammer potted his 17th of the campaign as he snagged a loose puck in the neutral zone, then moved into French River territory where he wired a wrister over the shoulder of Madden.
Klinkhammer then had a chance to put Greater Sudbury up five after 40 minutes when he was awarded a penalty shot while his club was down a skater.
However, after moving back and forth while coming in he fired his chance high and wide.
A seven-goal outburst blew it open in the third as Newton, with a pair; Lucas Antonioni; Spener Horgan; Eidan Macartney; King and Klinkhammer completed the blowout.
