NOJHL names its Rogers 3 Stars of the Week

SUDBURY, Ont. – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League (NOJHL) announced Monday that defenceman Spencer Horgan (Greater Sudbury Cubs) along with goaltenders Jace Knoerle (Soo Eagles) and Ayden Mullen (Timmins Rock) have been named its Rogers 3 Stars of the Week for the period ending January 18.

Spencer Horgan, (D) Greater Sudbury Cubs – Arriving at a significant milestone in his NOJHL career, the veteran defenceman reached the 200-point plateau with his offensive contributions during the time frame.

In all, the 20-year-old from Bowmanville, Ont., collected eight points in a trio of Greater Sudbury triumphs on three goals, two of which came shorthanded, while one was a game-winner, to go along with five assists.

Coming out of the Quinte Red Devils U18 AAA program before heading to the league, Horgan currently tops all blueliners in scoring this season on 44 points in 31 outings for the Cubs.

Jace Knoerle, (G) Soo Eagles – Part of the recent resurgence of the Eagles has been the play of netminder Knoerle in helping the Eagles win six straight and collect points in seven of eight.

Hailing from Roscoe, Illinois and coming out the Madison Capitols hockey system in Wisconsin, he picked up wins in both starts for Sault Ste. Marie over the weekend, sporting a 2.00 goals-against average along with a solid .941 save percentage in decisions over Iroquois Falls and Espanola.

Having picked up victories in each of his previous four appearances, the 19-year-old Knoerle has had 15 games on the campaign in which he has made 30, or more stops, in a contest.

Ayden Mullen, (G) Timmins Rock – As one of the youngest players in the entire NOJHL, the 16-year-old Kingston, Ont., product has delivered the goods for surging Timmins, who have won 21 consecutive games.

Stepping up while his netminding partner Frédéric Cousineau, who leads the league in save percentage and sits second in average remains out of the lineup due to injury, Mullen picked up a pair of wins in a home-and-home sweep of rival Hearst over the weekend.

Mullen, who played his minor hockey with both the Quinte Red Devils and the Greater Kingston Gaels, tops all rookie goalkeepers with his dozen wins and .916 save mark while holding down second spot in GAA at 2.60, to go with his solid 12-1-0-1 overall record.
