The ceremonial puck-drop on Thursday, October 14 signifies more than the start of another exciting Sudbury Cub’s home game. It announces a partnership between the Sudbury Cubs, SmartCell Communications and The Elgin Street Mission that will help bring good food and support to those living with hunger in the Sudbury community. For every goal scored on home ice by a Greater Sudbury Cubs player this season, SmartCell Communications will donate $10 to The Elgin Street Mission, which is the cost a day to feed someone experiencing homelessness. #OneGoalOneMealOneMission
SmartCell Communications is the preferred service provider & founding partner of the Sudbury Cubs, and has partnered with the Elgin Street Mission on a campaign called #OneGoalOneMealOneMission. Over the course of this initiative, Sudbury Cubs players will also be joining SmartCell Communications team members in food drives and meal service at the Mission. This partnership strengthens the Sudbury Cubs, Cubs Care program and #WeAreFamily commitment to serving their community.
For Carly Comtois, Director of Marketing Services at SmartCell Communications, this partnership is the perfect way to give back to the Sudbury community. “We selected The Elgin Street Mission as they have been on the frontlines with our community’s most vulnerable citizens since 1989. The Mission itself does not receive any regular government or city funding, but functions through the generosity of its community partners.” The Elgin Street Mission provides two meals a day (breakfast & supper) 365 days a year as well as clothing, showers, laundry facilities and a safe refuge in times of need. Individuals and families can also access counselling services, spiritual development and referrals in a non-judgmental community atmosphere.
“At SmartCell, we believe in building stronger communities and helping those who need it the most, so through acts of giving – big or small – we can positively impact the local communities where we live, work and serve”, Comtois explains. This commitment to serving the local community reaches well beyond the Sudbury borders. Steven Bowser, SmartCell Communications’ CEO and Dealer Principal, will fly in from the company’s head office in Ottawa to take part in the ceremonial puck drop and the entire project is supported by the network that gives back, which sees TELUS employees contributing more than one million community hours to helping those who need it most. As the largest TELUS/Koodo authorized dealer in Ontario, SmartCell Communications’ supports this initiative with projects like their partnership with The Sudbury Cubs and The Elgin Street Mission. “Cheering on a new hockey team which is right down the street from our Sudbury SmartCell location, then every goal that they score we donate $10 – it just made too much sense” added Comtois.
