SUDBURY, Ont. – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League-leading Greater Sudbury Cubs got two goals from Pierson Sobush to help propel them to a 4-1 decision over the Elliot Lake Red Wings Thursday evening at Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex.

Greater Sudbury began the night’s scoring 4:15 into the proceedings as Nicholas Toffoli snagged a clearing attempt at the point, then sent it across to Oliver Smith, who in turn fed Sobush parked at the top of the crease, where he neatly steered in his NOJHL-best 26th tally of the season and give him points in nine straight.

The Cubs then went up by a pair before the midway mark of the first period when Samuel Assinewai fired one through the legs of Elliot Lake netminder Cameron Smith from between the hash marks.

That marker saw him etch his name on the game sheet in each of his past 10 outings.

Adding another just over five minutes into the middle stanza, the home side capitalized after a Red Wings’ defender lost an edge and fell, which eventually allowed Billy Biedermann to set-up Sobush from behind the net and helped him extend his league-leading goal total to 27.

Moving to the final frame, Elliot Lake dashed Noah Metivier’s shutout bid with 7:23 remaining as they countered in transition in the neutral zone and sent Adam Matar on a partial break, where he tucked in a low attempt for his initial league marker.

Smith capped off the home-ice triumph however during a late power play when he took a nice cross-ice pass from Biedermann and whipped it in from the right side to round out the scoring.

With the result Greater Sudbury improved to a NOJHL-best 28-5-2-0 overall, while the Red Wings fell to 12-19-1-1 in defeat.
