TOP PLAYER IN THE NORTH COMMITS TO THE CUBS

The Greater Sudbury Cubs are pleased to announce the commitment of local prospect NOLAN NEWTON to play for the Cubs next season.   Newton, 16, was recently named the NOHA PLAYER OF THE YEAR and he was subsequently selected by the OHL Barrie Colts in the OHL Priority Selection – 93rd overall.

At 5’10”, 170 lbs, Newton displayed his outstanding skill and talents with the Sudbury U16 AAA Nickel Caps last season where he led his team in scoring as a 15 year old where recorded 14 goals, 22 assists for 36 points in just 27 games in the Great North U18 Hockey League.   Newton completed the season as an affiliate call-up with the Cubs and recorded 1 goal and 3 assists in 9 games.

“We are extremely proud to have Nolan select to play for us next season as he looks to develop his skills to play in the OHL for the Barrie Colts as soon as he can” notes Cubs Head Coach Darryl Moxam.  “Our staff is so high on this young player and we cannot wait to see him in our line-up. Nolan is a high-energy skilled player and plays with speed.   He has excellent vision and hockey sense and loves to compete each and every night. Our fans are in for a real treat as they get to enjoy watching this local top prospect perform on the big ice surface at Countryside Arena.”

The local youngster is equally excited to join the Cubs organization: “I am very honoured and fortunate for the opportunity to play for my hometown team” notes Newton.  “When I listened to what management had to say about their new hockey development program, it really made me believe that they will make me a better hockey player and person. I am so excited to be able to work with Coach Moxam and his staff and help them bring home a championship for the hockey fans of Sudbury.”

Newton has been working-out faithfully in Barrie this summer and has continued to improve and add strength.  Newton will be on the ice this week at the Future Cubs Development Camp where he will participate in games on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday beginning at 2:30 pm at the Countryside Arena.
