GALLERY: Newton notches two as Cubs double up Paper Kings

ESPANOLA, Ont. – A pair of Nolan Newton goals, as well as an assist, helped propel the Greater Sudbury Cubs to a 4-2 victory over the Espanola Paper Kings in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action Saturday at the Regional Recreation Complex.

It was Greater Sudbury that got the game’s first goal as Mason Walker took a draw won by Newton and moved to the middle where he fired it past Espanola netminder Logan Vale, 11:52 into the match-up.

A Joseph Coates man advantage effort drew the Paper Kings level early in the second stanza, as he blasted a shot past the Cubs’ Matthew Vahramian from the left circle.

Regrouping, the visitors responded with a couple of tallies to take a 3-1 lead with half a game to play.

Newton’s 24th of the season and 90th career NOJHL marker saw him work his way free in front and snap a shot past the blocker of Vale.

They then had Aleksander Duguay put a play into the crease from down low that Mateo Signoretti collected and put in at 7:35.

Pulling closer on the power play in the latter stages of the session featured Graydon Guthrie as he took a cross-ice pass from Carter Drigo and ripped it home.

Regaining their two-goal cushion near the midway mark of the third, while up a skater, Newton bagged his second of the night and 25th of the campaign by dipping around a defender up high before racing in a sending a sizzler into the top shelf.

That proved to be the evening’s final tally as Greater Sudbury skated off with the win while improving to 22-6-1-1.

With the loss, Espanola fell to 18-13-0-1.
